Treatment Plant Upgrades With Hach 1720E Turbidimeters

For the last two years, the state of South Carolina recognized the North Augusta, SC, Water Treatment Plant for compliance to stringent, Area-wide Optimization Program (AWOP) water quality standards. In fact, said Chris Lind, Superintendent of Water Production, filtered water there did not exceed 0.09 NTU last year and averaged 0.05 NTU, in spite of variable-turbidity Savannah River source water.

Since 1992 – well before recently enacted IESWTR and LT1ESWTR regulations – this progressive facility has embraced the policy of individual filter effluent monitoring. The conventional treatment facility recently upgraded ten of its 16 dual-media filters with Hach 1720E Turbidimeter Sensors. These instruments, and other Series 1720 Turbidimeters monitoring raw water, two settling basins, and final effluent, read to the plant SCADA system. Operators see all turbidity values at each point, along with readings for pH, chlorine residual, and total organic carbon (TOC).
