Soggy Weather Presents Challenges In Preventing Water Pollution

Marshall Services offers advice on how to maintain water quality around your home

Eastern Pennsylvania, like much of the eastern United States, has seen some soggy weather—and it’s probably not over. Consistent, heavy rain can present challenges in keeping our water healthy and contaminant-free. Marshall Services, a leading HVAC, plumbing, electric and heating oil company serving Montgomery County, Pennsylvania since 1945, has been keeping water safe for decades.

August is National Water Quality month in the United States. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 40 percent of the nation’s waterways suffer water quality problems. Water pollution can negatively affect the use of water for drinking, household needs, recreation, business, fishing, education and transportation. Public water systems treat and deliver billions of gallons of clean water each day to our homes, schools and businesses. Much of this water comes from rivers and lakes. It is treated to remove particulates, chemicals and bacteria before being delivered to consumers. Our local and federal governments make large investments to ensure our water is safe and drinkable, but the responsibility does not end there.

“Water quality is everyone’s responsibility,” said Glenn Dickey Jr., owner of Marshall Services. “When we see large amounts of rainfall, we also see increased strain on our water systems. This month reminds us to take a look at what we are doing in our household and in our communities to keep our water clean. The most important thing to remember is that clean water equals sustainable life. We can all take simple action steps to prevent contamination and protect Pennsylvania’s fresh water sources and maintain our water quality. It matters to all of us.”

Here are a few measures the professionals at Marshall Services suggest to protect fresh water, prevent contamination and keep your water clean:

  • Maintain your septic system. Otherwise, you’re not only polluting the environment, you’re putting your family’s health at risk, and you may be flushing thousands of dollars down the drain.
  • Avoid anti-bacterial soaps or cleaning products. Instead, look for non-toxic cleaning agents and household products when possible.
  • Flush only water down drains. Do not flush expired or unwanted medicines, anti-freeze or motor oil. Do not dispose of these items in storm drains either.
  • Fix leaks from your car or motor-powered equipment, and use a liner in your driveway. These leaks contribute to storm water pollution.
  • Promote education. The EPA and the National Environmental Education Foundation are partnering to provide online activities that increase awareness of water quality issues.
  • Tour a waste water treatment plant to increase awareness about what we “flush.”
  • Support the organizations working to spread awareness and make a difference.
