Plans Progress To Upgrade Virginia Wastewater Treatment Plant

Upgrade will support residential and economic development in the town

Irish Water, working in partnership with Cavan County Council, is progressing with the design of an upgrade to the Virginia Wastewater Treatment Plant which will support residential and economic development in the town. This project is included in Irish Water’s capital investment plan and will be delivered during the lifetime of the current plan (2017-2021).

Included in the works will be upgrades to the inlet works, storm tanks, pumping station, main treatment process and sludge treatment. When completed the works will lead to an improved quality of effluent being discharged to Lough Ramor which will ensure Virginia is in compliance with Irish and European Regulations and the license granted by EPA.

Part of current Capital Investment Plan (2017-2021)
Commenting, Irish Water’s infrastructure lead Colm Boyd said “Irish Water is acutely aware of the need to upgrade the Virginia Wastewater Treatment Plant to not only improve the quality of effluent being discharged to Lough Ramor, but also to facilitate residential and economic development in the town. With this in mind we are progressing a solution under the current capital investment plant which will be delivered during the lifetime of this plan (2017-2021). As part of the current preliminary design, Irish Water is looking at the potential to progress interim improvements which could improve the current situation.”

Irish Water is working in partnership with Cavan County Council to continually improve wastewater treatment throughout the county. This project forms part of Irish Water’s investment plan where works have been prioritised to address the most critical issues in line with commitments outlined in Irish Water’s business plan. Delivery of the business plan will involve a €5.5B investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021.
