Duperon® Wastewater Washer Compactor Option Reduces Energy, Debris Hauling, And Maintenance Costs

Innovative discharge extension option saves money and treatment plant floor space

Duperon Corporation, leader in innovative preliminary liquids/solids separation systems, has announced that the discharge extension option for its patented washer compactor is now widely available. The unique system transports the compacted debris that's collected by a bar screen in a wastewater treatment plant up to 40 feet in any direction, even vertically, without the energy usage and layout challenges of a traditional motorized conveyance system. The technology eliminates maintenance requirements and provides an innovative method for managing compacted screenings without additional equipment.

Washer Compactor Discharge Extension Option relies on gravity for resistance. The result is consistent, effective compression through a customized chute, acting as a conveyor to guide the debris plug to a different location inside or out of the building. Debris forms into a column - a long "plug" - that is routed by the vertical chute. The weight of the plug column provides the resistance for additional compaction. Since the debris is nearly fully compacted prior to its arrival in the chute, vertical elevations are achieved with little or no further resistance.

Doug Koss is the operations supervisor at the 10 MGD West Bay County Regional WWTP in Bay City, Michigan, where the first DEO was installed. They wanted to eliminate the conveyance of debris while also drying it to reduce landfill hauling costs. The application required a 90^° angle of ascent on the chute, which travels directly up the wall for more than 30 feet before transitioning into a horizontal stretch before traveling through the wall for disposal.

"Our screenings are now very dried out by the time they reach the dumpster," Koss said. "We're seeing a light grey color to the debris, with most of the organics washed out in the augers. We're really removing the debris and rags. The debris is much more compressed than it was before, much drier and lighter weight," said Koss. "Before we installed the Duperon®Washer Compactor, we'd have to manage a dumpster with wet garbage and rags. It just makes a nice, dry discharge, and it's all in one piece of equipment. All the mechanical ability is on one floor. We're quite pleased with the application."
