Accurate Measurement Of Sewage Flow Made Possible By Clamp-On Technology

Welsh Water, the sixth largest regulated water and sewerage company in England and Wales, plays a crucial role in providing essential services to 1.2 million households and over 110,000 businesses. With a daily average of 198 million gallons of drinking water distributed through an extensive network of pipelines, the company also manages wastewater collection and treatment across a complex sewer network. However, the mountainous terrain presents significant challenges, particularly in the operation of sewage pumping stations (SPSs), which are vital for effective wastewater management.
Many of Welsh Water's 1,861 SPSs lacked modern flow measurement systems, often relying on outdated electromagnetic flow meters. This reliance on imprecise data from sump level changes posed operational inefficiencies and environmental risks, particularly during storm events when high sump levels indicated potential pump failures or spills. To counter these challenges, Welsh Water sought innovative solutions, exploring clamp-on technology for accurate sewage flow measurement.
