Xylem Calls For EU Action On Water Strategy Following Climate Risk Warning

The first-ever European Climate Risk Assessment’s revelation of escalating droughts and floods highlights the urgent need for action. Alexis de Kerchove, Xylem’s Senior Director of Client Sustainability, emphasizes the report’s clear message: “Without urgent action, we face increasingly severe consequences, including the loss of lives to heatwaves, and economic losses from mega-floods potentially exceeding EUR 1 trillion per year by the end of the century.”

Water is identified as a critical, cross-cutting field across all risk clusters, underscoring the need for a holistic EU water strategy to mitigate climate-related drivers and support the resilience efforts in ecosystem protection, food production, health, infrastructure, and economy and finance. “Solutions exist to rapidly mitigate the risk and cost of extreme climate events. It’s imperative for the next Commission to develop an integrated water strategy that ensures policy cohesion and facilitates the scaling of technologies that can drive resilience in water resources and infrastructure.”

As the EU readies its Climate Resilience Communication, Xylem urges a unified approach to water management, crucial for safeguarding Europe's environmental and economic future.
