Water utilities appear to be under water when it comes to conservation efforts and adopting new technologies to help customers monitor water usage. Although water is viewed as a precious resource around the globe, little is being done to save water in North America.
While electric utilities pursue smart grid technologies and smart meters on a fast scale, only about seven percent of U.S. utilities have deployed smart metering technologies. Another seven percent have pilot programs in place, according to a study from Oracle, and an equal amount are in the midst of planning for adoption. However, nearly two-thirds of water utilities are not currently considering a smart meter program of any kind.
