Munksjö has selected Veolia’s AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR process to treat its effluent, surpassing discharge standards required by local authorities. This new selection setts up the AnoxKaldnes MBBR as the preferred biological wastewater treatment in the pulp & paper market.
Munksjö, the world leader in the production of advanced paper products developed with intelligent paper technology, has relied on Veolia Water Technologies to undertake the expansion works off its industrial wastewater treatment plant at Tolosa mill, located at its factory in Guipúzcoa, in the north of Spain. The project is co-financed by the European Union through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Department of Environment and Territorial Policy of the Basque Government.
The new installation, with a capacity of o 200 m3/hour, will use AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR for biological treatment and Actiflo® for ballasted water clarification and settling. The combination of these two Veolia proprietary technologies will allow for removal of the dissolved chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the suspended particulate matter, thus obtaining a high-quality effluent, surpassing the current standards required by the local legislation for river discharge. The technological viability of this process was demonstrated through pilot tests carried out by Veolia in 20 014, which also allowed for f the design n of the full-scale plant to o be optimizeed.
One of the main innovations of the solution put forth by Veolia is the use of the new generation of Z-MBBR carriers. The 3D design allows the biofilm to grow in a controlled and protected way until reaching a predetermined thickness. The use of these supports will eliminate the biodegradable filtered COD from the water and avoid the possible formation of calcium precipitates.
One of the key factors of success in this project has been the capacity of the Actiflo® process to be revamped as Actiflo® Carb or Actiflo® Soft processes. These Actiflo variants will allow Munksjö to anticipate new environmental requirements in accordance with the company's environmental standards that demonstrate its commitment and environmental awareness.
AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR biological wastewater technology is currently being used in more than 700 references worldwide for both municipal and industrial applications.
