USFilter to provide the total water management system for Hermiston Power Project

PALM DESERT, Calif., August 17, 2001 - USFilter announced today it was awarded contracts to provide a 744 gallon-per-minute (gpm) water treatment system for boiler feed system make-up, and a 7,000 gpm pretreatment system for the Hermiston Power Project, owned and operated by Calpine (CPN) Corporation in San Jose, Calif.

The Hermiston Power Project is a 540MW combined cycle power plant located in Northeastern Oregon near the town of Hermiston, and will use water from the Columbia River for plant make-up. The plant is scheduled to go on line in the summer of 2002.

The boiler feed system will include USFilter's patented IIPLP double-pass RO system and CDI-LX electrodeionization system. USFilter will also supply multimedia filters and off-site regenerated resin to handle peak flows during the peak generation.

USFilter developed its proprietary continuous deionization technology over a decade ago, and has installed over 1,300 CDI systems in power plants, semiconductor facilities and biopharmaceutical companies worldwide. The CDI-LX systems are specifically engineered for the power industry with B31.1 stainless steel piping, and are designed to meet high-purity-water standards for conductivity and silica.

The pretreatment system will include USFilter's ACTIFLO system, to provide clarified water for both cooling and boiler make-up, as well as additional filtration equipment. The water treatment system is scheduled for delivery in the 4th quarter of 2001. Utility Engineering is the engineer on the project, and The Industrial Company (TIC) is the constructor.

Said Frank Firsching, president of USFilter's system's group, "USFilter continues to work closely with Calpine to apply our entire range of technologies, services and capabilities to cost effectively meet Calpine's various water management needs at its power stations."
