Kruger Inc., a Veolia business unit specialized in water treatment solutions for municipalities, partnered with the Sanitation Districtsof Los Angeles County to compare the effectiveness of deammonification from two pilot-scale reactor configurations of ANITA™ Mox: a Moving-Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) and the Integrated Fixed-Film Activated Sludge (IFAS) application.

The American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists® awarded the 2015 Honor Award for Research to the Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County (LACSD) for their pilot work on ANITA Mox. The LACSD was also recognized by the Los Angeles Basin Section (LABS) of the California Water Environment Association (CWEA) by being awarded the 2014 Engineering Research Achievement of the Year. Kruger’s ANITA Mox pilot was heralded for paving the way for significant improvements in the efficiency of nitrogen removal operations at the LACSD facilities.

Implementation of either IFAS or MBBR ANITA Mox will reduce chemical consumption, biomass production and aeration, energy needed to remove nitrogen. Overall, the ANITA Mox pilots at LACSD will help to advance more cost-effective and environmentally responsible nitrogen removal practices.
