Sustainability is deeply entrenched in the function of water utilities and the service they provide. As environmental challenges increase so too does the importance of sustainability in providing clean water.

But achieving sustainability is no simple feat. It requires a careful balancing act among three competing obligations: social, environmental, and economic. The primary social priority is to ensure potable water is available when and safe when needed by ratepayers. A water utility’s main economic focus is to provide its services while staying within the budget allotted by the city, municipality, or other governing body. The key environmental obligations are balancing supply and demand of water and minimizing overall environmental impact.

This balance can be achieved, but it starts with setting realistic goals and applying resources toward achieving them. Thankfully, there is an abundance of technologies that make this possible. This article will explain what those technologies are and how they can be utilized to begin to journey to sustainable drinking water.
