Capital investments for wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) carry a certain amount of inherent risk. In order to manage that risk, operations staff and design engineers must familiarize themselves with the products and processes that comprise the investment, as well as consider how the investment will be integrated into existing systems. This is particularly critical for technologies like fine screens and downstream systems, where site-specific variations and sizing challenges can significantly impact performance. For established technologies, decision makers may obtain relevant data from published studies by experts, and other sources. However, this data may not have site-specific applicability. For example, many types of fine screening technologies require precise sizing and design considerations to perform reliably. Pilot testing offers an opportunity to obtain the most current and relevant data possible.
