The High Cost Of Dirty Data In Wastewater Automation

As wastewater utilities increasingly adopt automation, predictive analytics, and digital twins, the quality of the field data feeding those systems becomes critical to reliable decision-making. Inaccurate level measurements can propagate through automated networks, producing false analytics and potentially contributing to overflows, odor complaints, and other operational problems. Legacy technologies such as differential pressure, bubbler, and ultrasonic transmitters can be vulnerable to changing wastewater density, temperature, condensation, mist, foam, and physical obstructions. High-frequency 80 GHz radar offers an alternative, using a narrow signal beam and frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) technology to provide consistent, non-contacting level measurement while filtering abnormal signals and background interference. Modern radar instruments can also simplify deployment and maintenance through compact designs, Bluetooth connectivity, guided commissioning, and advanced diagnostics. With corrosion-resistant materials suited to harsh wastewater environments, these systems can provide reliable level data with less routine intervention. Improving measurement accuracy at the field level ultimately strengthens the data foundation required for digital twins, predictive modeling, and automated wastewater collection systems.
