The Case For Moving From Analog To Digital Controls

As experienced water treatment operators retire, utilities face the loss of tacit knowledge surrounding legacy systems and manual operating practices. Increasing automation can help address this challenge, but preparing a facility for the future requires more than installing new hardware. Equipment must be capable of communicating with evolving SCADA and industrial network architectures while supporting a gradual transition from analog to digital controls. Facilities can also use hybrid configurations that connect analog and Ethernet-based signals simultaneously, allowing operators to validate digital controls before completing the transition. Specifying equipment with native digital communication and precision control capabilities can therefore help utilities preserve capital investments while building more standardized, repeatable, and scalable operations for the next generation of water professionals.
