Water utility managers must constantly stay on top of regulatory changes. Water plant operators currently test for more than 80 contaminants, including manganese. Manganese is regulated under secondary drinking water standards for aesthetic considerations.

However, manganese testing will be required under U.S. EPA’s upcoming Fourth Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR 4). The EPA uses data from the UCMR program to develop regulatory decisions for emerging contaminants. This indicates a potential for manganese to become a primary contaminant in the future.

Water Online spoke with AdEdge Water Technologies’ R. Brit Merola, Ph.D., and Sanika Pendse about this possibility. These industry leaders discuss the problem of manganese and how best to remove it from drinking water.
