PeroxyChem Helps To Develop First Approved Procedure For Measuring Peracetic Acid (PAA) Residuals In Wastewater

PeroxyChem, a leader in wastewater disinfection technology, recently worked with Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater and other industry professionals to develop a method for the analysis of peracetic acid (PAA) residuals. The wastewater industry and regulatory agencies were previously relying on methods not specific to PAA.

The method utilizes the DPD colorimetric approach which is widely used to analyze free and combined chlorine. The development of a method specific to PAA will enable wastewater professionals to accurately measure residuals in a plant’s outflow to meet their National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit.

“The publication of the PAA Standard Method represents several years of effort to provide an acceptable and reliable method to measure PAA residuals in wastewater,” said Dr. Philip Block, PeroxyChem’s technology director for Water Treatment Technologies and a member of the Standard Methods Committee Joint Task Group charged with developing the PAA method. “The use of peracetic acid as a wastewater disinfectant has grown significantly over the past ten years due to its efficacy and lack of disinfection byproduct formation. With this came the need to develop analysis specific to the chemistry, further validating PAA as an effective alternative to chlorine disinfection.”
