LDSF is a completely premelted material designed to meet the special requirements of steel makers and metallurgists. Secondary metallurgy has become a critical quality control step between the melting furnace or the converter and the continuous caster. A key feature for successful ladle metallurgy is slag control. LDSF is specially designed for this purpose with the required chemical composition and physical properties, which make it easy to store and handle. Synthetic calcium aluminate slags are already used with success in many large steel companies such as Timken, USX, Bethlehem, Nippon Steel and NKK. General Characteristics: LDSF is not a by-product, but is a pure calcium aluminate of controlled composition. It is produced in high capacity reverberatory furnaces by complete fusion of bauxite and limestone, which ensures a homogenous product of constant composition. LDSF is hard, stable and non-dusty. It is easily stored and handled. LDSF melts readily at "steel making" temperatures. It has a good sulfur retention and helps the rapid formation of an effective desufurizing slag. LDSF calcium aluminate contains no fluorine compounds and thus avoids damage to refractories and atmospheric pollution. LDSF is an excellent cover slag for preventing gaseous pick-up from the atmosphere and also as a sink for the entrapment and absorption of non-metallic inclusions from the steel.
