IndianOil Signs Agreement For Reuse Of Treated Water For Mathura Refinery

Cabinet Ministers appreciate IOC’s sterling role in environment sustainability

In the august presence of Mr. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation and Road Transport, Highways & Shipping, Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas and Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Mr. Sanjiv Singh, Chairman, Mr. B V Rama Gopal, Director (Refineries), and Dr. SSV Ram Kumar, Director (R&D), an agreement was signed for the reuse of treated waste water for Mathura Refinery on June 13, 2018 at New Delhi. The tripartite agreement was signed on behalf of IndianOil by Mr. L W Khongwir, ED, Mathura Refinery, with Mr. Rajesh Mittal, MD, UP Jal Nigam and Mr. Hitesh Makwana, (IAS) & ED (Projects), NMCG. Mr. SM Vaidya, ED (Operations), RHQ, was also present under whose tenure the MoU was signed last year at Mathura. The other dignitaries present on the occasion were Dr. Satya Singh, Union Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation and HRD and Mr. Arjun Ram Meghwal, Union Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation and Parliamentary Affairs.

Mr. Gadkari expressed his gratitude to the inspiring leadership and vision of Mr. Pradhan, who wholeheartedly supported this project, and congratulated team IndianOil for their contribution towards converting waste to wealth. He looked forward to a synergistic approach to develop a model to create wealth from waste along with the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. He expressed optimism that the Bio-CNG being produced by the oil industry can be used in the future to run public transportation. Mr. Pradhan appreciated the Mathura STP model and looked forward to this becoming a case study on environment sustainability and innovate business model in future. Through the dynamic and proactive support of IndianOil, we have got the opportunity to play a historic role in infrastructure development of the country. He also congratulated IndianOil for using a new model to produce Bio-CNG from Methane (from bio-digesters.), which can be a new source of energy.

Another agreement signed on the occasion was Concession Agreement for development of Sewage Treatment Plant through Hybrid Annuity based Public-Private Partnership for India’s first city-wide integrated Sewerage Infrastructure for Mathura. The project is being established at Lakshmi Nagar, Mathura, and shall be completed within 24 months. The STP is being developed using suitable technology such as membrane-based bio reactors to meet raw water quality requirement of industries. Mathura Refinery shall reuse the treated waste water from this plant. 20 MLD (million litres per day) of treated water shall be bought by Mathura Refinery. Though the capital cost of setting up the plant is being borne by NMCG, IndianOil shall bear the O&M and power cost and shall be paying Rs. 8.70 per kl for the treated water during the first 15 years of its operations. With this initiative by Mathura Refinery the effluent water, which was hitherto being discharged in the river Yamuna will be used by the refinery for industrial purposes, completely eliminating the use of fresh water for refinery operations. Thus Mathura Refinery is playing a sterling role as a responsible corporate citizen in water conservation through this innovate business model.

With this significant milestone, IndianOil is not only living up to its vision of environment conservation and preservation, but also playing a dynamic role in the mission of Clean Ganga, a mighty river that is nurturer of our civilisation and a symbol of faith for Indians.
