Whenever a new bed of granular activated carbon (GAC) is loaded, it is crucial that operators follow standard bed conditioning and start-up procedures as specified by the manufacturer. While the performance of GAC filters is widely acknowledged, the role of proper start-up procedures in optimizing adsorption is often underappreciated. These procedures are designed to optimize the performance of the carbon bed and maximize adsorption capacity to achieve treatment goals.

In addition, understanding proper procedures in advance of start-up can help operators plan for a successful carbon changeout or new GAC filter installation. This will ensure that the site is properly prepared, that equipment is available and ready, and that any other necessary logistical steps are taken. It can also reduce the risk of violating state or local regulations with regard to the proper handling of backwash water, effluent water, spent carbon, and more.
