A HiPOx® Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) system was installed at the US Air Force (USAF) Plant 44 site to destroy 1,4-dioxane and trichloroethylene (TCE) from contaminated groundwater. Treated groundwater is then re-injected at the site to become a part of the drinking water supply for the nearby City of Tucson, Arizona. Among the benefits of the HiPOx oxidation process is its environmental sustainability. The system produces no waste, eliminates hazardous waste disposal from the site, and reduces CO2 emissions by over 859 tonnes (1.8 million lb) per year. Moreover, installation of the HiPOx system has reduced the operating footprint of the existing treatment system by 98%, and resulted in a net annual OPEX savings of approximately $107k, achieving a net payback of approximately four years.
