Headworks And Beyond: When Is It Time To Upgrade?

As their name implies, Headworks International Inc. deals with the mechanical aspects of primary treatment (“head of the works”), namely bar screens, but the story doesn’t end there.

“We are also in the secondary process with MBBR [moving-bed bioreactors],” explains Headworks’ Ranjit Nair. And sometimes the systems go hand-in-hand…

“From an application standpoint, you could have an activated sludge plant which has now decided to do something a little more technically complex, such as an MBBR or a membrane or sequencing batch reactor – an SBR. That will almost mandate that they replace their existing screening solution and go for something much finer.”

What are some other drivers for equipment upgrades?

“We see a tightening of regulations,” says Nair. “It’s good for the environment. It’s good for the business as well – a lot of opportunities for newer, emerging technologies that have evolved, and I think it’s about time that these are implemented.”
