HDR-Led Project Named Top Water Reuse Project In Arizona

Phoenix, AZ — The Town of Gilbert South Recharge Site has been named Water Reuse Project of the Year by the Arizona Water & Pollution Control Association, which is the state section for both the American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation.

The project's first phase began operation in January 2007 to coincide with start-up of a new water reclamation facility. It was designed to recharge an average of nine million gallons of water per day, providing recharge capacity and wildlife habitat to replace habitat previously removed to make improvements to the adjacent Sonoqui Wash. Design and master planning for the multi-phase project was led by HDR and supported by landscape architects at C.F. Shuler, Inc., and the legacy design firm of Design Workshop. Additional recharge capacity will be added in Phase 2, with peak capacity of 32 million gallons per day. While the primary focus is management and storage of reclaimed water, the master plan also includes possible public amenities such as a visitor center, outdoor classroom and interpretive exhibits.
