First Septic Tank Certified By NSF
When the wastewater from sinks, toilets, tubs, and laundry leaves the house, it goes into a septic tank, a big concrete or fiberglass, or plastic tank that is buried in the yard. Wastewater flows into the tank at one end and leaves the tank at the other.
The problem is with poorly designed and mismanaged septic systems. When septic systems fail - from lack of maintenance, bad installation, incorrect sizing or poor soil - drinking water can be polluted. Untreated wastewater can leak to the surface where rain washes it into waterways. It can also seep into groundwater and pollute wells.
However, thanks to an independent certification program developed by NSF International, manufacturers of septic tanks can make sure that they meet the standards that help prevent such failure. These program requirements include standards IAPMO PS-1 and CSA B-66, which include design, material and manufacturing requirements for prefabricated septic tanks as well as U.S. Uniform and Canadian Plumbing Codes requirements.
Most septic systems are designed to have a lifetime of 20 to 30 years, but many septic systems will fail before this time. One of the most common reasons for early failure is improper maintenance. When a system is poorly maintained and not pumped out on a regular basis, the drain (or septic) field can become clogged with organic material, resulting in contamination of nearby soil or waterways. One of the best ways for homeowners to avoid a septic system failure is to pump their septic tank regularly.

Ace Roto-Mold, a division of Den Hartog Industries, well known for its quality plastic tanks and accessories, recently became the first manufacturer certified by NSF to meet the stringent requirements developed for septic tanks.
"Becoming certified by NSF to both IAPMO PS-1 and CSA B-66 standards gives distributors and consumers across the U.S. and Canada confidence in the design and manufacture of our tanks," explained John G. Den Hartog, Den Hartog Industries, Inc. President. "We appreciate the complete services offered by NSF as well as the professionalism of their staff. We are proud to offer Ace Roto-Mold septic tanks that have been independently certified to meet all NSF, Canadian and Uniform Plumbing Code requirements."
