Elf Atochem North America, Inc.

ATOFINA Chemicals offers hydroxyl terminated polybutadiene resins, which provide unique properties for your adhesive and sealant formulations. Poly bd® R-45HTLO resin contains predominantly primary terminal hydroxyl groups having high reactivity with diisocyanates in the formation of polyurethanes. Poly bd® R-20LM resin has similar hydroxyl functionality with lower viscosity and molecular weight. Adhesives and sealants based on these urethanes show excellent water resistance and low temperature flexibility.

Urethane elastomers based on Poly bd® resins exhibit hydrolytic stability and low moisture vapor transmission rates that surpass other types of polyurethanes. The hydrophobic nature of the polybutadiene backbone, coupled with the lack of ester and ether linkages in the urethanes, produces adhesives and sealants that are resistant to hydrolysis, even in boiling water. These same characteristics also give excellent resistance to aqueous acids and bases.

The polybutadiene backbone of our Poly bd® R-45HTLO resin also imparts excellent low temperature flexibility to urethane systems. Though somewhat dependent on formulation, many Poly bd® resin based urethane systems have glass transition temperatures as low as -70°C. These same backbone characteristics also lead to excellent thermal cycling properties.

Perhaps you work with epoxy based adhesives and sealants? Consider our Poly bd® 600 and 605 resins for epoxy based formulations. Compatible with many epoxies, the Poly bd® 600 or 605 resin introduces flexibility and increased adhesion to your current epoxy formulations. Our Poly bd® R-45VT resin is a vinyl terminated polybutadiene that introduces similar properties to UV cured or peroxide cured systems.

All our Poly bd® products increase adhesion to difficult substrates, including oily steel, low energy films, glass, aluminum, and plastics such as polyester sheet, polycarbonate castings and acrylic parts. For severe environmental conditions or demanding performance criteria, consider our Poly bd® resin line for your next application.
