The Water and Wastewater Equipment Manufacturers Association (WWEMA) and Water & Wastes Digest (W&WD) announced the 2018 WWEMA/W&WD Scholarship Award winner at WWEMA’s 110th Annual Meeting in Manalapan (West Palm Beach), Florida in November. Each year, Water & Wastes Digest collaborates with WWEMA to offer a $1,000 scholarship to a WWEMA-member employee or employee’s child. This year’s winner was Elena Smith, a chemical engineering student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Bob Crossen, Managing Editor, Water & Wastes Digest and Industrial Water & Wastes Digest presented the award to Bill Decker, Vice-President & General Manager-Equipment & Services Group, at Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc., who accepted the award on Elena’s behalf, as she was unable to attend. Elena has a parent employed by WWEMA-member Aqua-Aerobic Systems, Inc.

Smith is proud of her efforts to maintain and promote a sustainable life; she uses reusable bags at grocery stores, bamboo silverware instead of plasticware, and reusable K-cups to limit her impact on landfills. Upon graduating, she hopes to construct plants that will separate toxic chemicals and byproducts before water is discharged into the environment. She also has several extracurricular interests including book club, wind ensemble, volley ball, color guard, and math team. Join WWEMA in congratulating Elena!
