Eastern Municipal Water District wins Clair A. Hill Award
The program began when EMWD moved one of its original buildings to its wetlands site. Prior to the building relocation, several classes had to be cancelled due to inclement weather conditions. Once moved, EMWD transformed the building into a teaching and research facility. It accommodates special education students as well as disabled students from around the world.
The educational program allows students to learn about reclaimed water, test water quality, study groundwater, check pH balances, study animal evidence, and identify and classify birds. It is also open for college professors to bring the classroom into the site and university and governmental researchers.
The award is an annual program that recognizes outstanding achievements by public water agencies. The winning agency receives a $3,000 scholarship to award to a deserving student in the name of Clair A. Hill, founder of the consulting engineering firm CH2M Hill. The winner is also recognized at the association's conference as well as throughout the year.
There were eight finalists in four of the categories for the award. The finalists and the categories are:
- CATEGORY 1 -- Operations: The San Diego County Water Authority for its systematic, proactive pipeline Condition Assessment Report (CAR).
