CH2M HILL Employees Contribute To New WEF Solids Process Design And Management Manual
The Water Environment Federation biosolids manual is a long-awaited and significant update of the Environmental Protection Agency’s 1979 manual
CH2M HILL, a global full-service consulting, design, construction, and operations firm, is pleased to announce that with the help of CH2M HILL employee expertise, the Water Environment Federation (WEF) recently published the Solids Process Design and Management manual—a long awaited, comprehensive and significant update of Process Design Manual for Sludge Treatment and Disposal, originally published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 1979. With support from senior EPA staffers Dr. James Smith and Robert Bastian, Tim Shea, CH2M HILL Fellow Residuals Management Technologist, helped lead the entire effort as Task Force Co-Chair along with Michael Moore, National Biosolids Lead at HDR. Todd Williams, CH2M HILL Global Technology Leader for Residuals Resource Recovery, was a lead author and on the WEF Technical Practice Committee as part of the WEF Project Advisory Board for this major undertaking. In addition, CH2M HILL’s Bob Forbes, Tim Constantine, Chris Easter, David Oerke, Samuel Jeyanayagam, Tom Sadick, Peter Burrowes, Julian Sandino and Dru Whitlock volunteered their time as lead authors or reviewers.
“As the industry’s existing go-to manual hadn’t been updated in over thirty years, there were a lot of new processes, technologies, procedures and best practices that we needed to make sure were included in the new WEF manual and that would remain relevant until we update again in a few years,” comments Shea. “This was a large undertaking—almost five years from inception to publication—and was only made possible by the efforts and thought leadership provided by the Task Force. I applaud everyone on a job well done in developing this document, which will be one of the leading references in the biosolids management field for decades to come.”
This publication is intended for use by professionals engaged in the design, approval, and operation of municipal solids treatment and disposal systems. This new manual expands the previous manual from 19 to 26 chapters, with contemporary new material on planning, public outreach and involvement, solids production and characterization, design approach, conveyance, conditioning, thickening, waste minimization, anaerobic and aerobic digestion, dewatering, composting, alkaline treatment, disinfection and stabilization, thermal drying, thermal oxidation, pyrolysis and gasification, transport and storage, odor management, sidestreams, instrumentation and monitoring, land application and product distribution, landfill management, emerging technologies, and treatment and utilization of green gases. While comprehensive in scope and depth in its own right, the revised manual includes many references for related subject material presented and readily available elsewhere.
The publication is now available for purchase from WEF.
