BE WiSE And Carollo Engineers Celebrate Women Working Wonders With Water

On Saturday, Carollo Engineers, in partnership with the BE WiSE (Better Education for Women in Science) organization and The Fleet Science Center, hosted the BE WiSE “Women Working Wonders with Water” workshop to help educate kids about Pure Water San Diego and the importance of clean water to our community. Carollo had several female engineers on hand to talk about their respective engineering career paths, share their passion for working wonders with water, and explain how they've made contributions in the early years of their careers.

Through workshops like this, the goal is to help develop a community of young women to engage in science, demonstrate the importance of water in the community, and increase participants’ opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) fields of study. Presenters included Megan Brown, Hannah Ford, Nancy Lundie, Teri Lytle, Amy Martin, and Aimee Zhao.

The workshop, attended by approximately 100 female middle and high school students, also included overviews of water-related projects in the local San Diego Community, including both the Pure Water San Diego and the Carlsbad Desalination Plant. With Pure Water San Diego, the City is addressing the need for a new locally-controlled, drought-proof water supply. A phased, multi-year program to produce purified water to supplement the City’s drinking water supply is already underway.

We truly recognize the importance of encouraging young women to pursue STEAM-related careers,” said Megan Brown, Senior Project Manager, Carollo Engineers. “Supporting and nurturing their enthusiasm and interest in science is critical in getting them to think about a career in the STEAM fields. That’s why we were excited to partner with BE WiSE on this important initiative. We also understand the importance of teaching students about local water programs like Pure Water San Diego, which will produce one-third of the City’s drinking water supply by 2035.”

The event was a collaboration with BE WiSE, a program that engages young women in science, technology, engineering, and math learning experiences in collaboration with the region’s research, industry, and academic institutions. The program reaches girls in grades 7-12, with 500 members enrolled. Coordinated by the Fleet Science Center, the students are invited to specific workshops throughout the year, including mentoring and overnight events.
