By partnering with Itron, Abbanoa, a water service provider in Sardinia, Italy, has taken significant steps to reduce non-revenue water (NRW) on the island. With 53% of water losses attributed to leaking pipes, it was crucial for Abbanoa to address this issue. To tackle the problem, Abbanoa has integrated 400,000 Itron mechanical meters, with 40,000 of them featuring communication modules.

In 2022, Abbanoa took its efforts a step further by implementing solid-state water meters, specifically Itron's Intelis wSource smart meters. These meters collect more detailed and frequent data, allowing for better monitoring of the water distribution network and improved billing efficiency. Designed to withstand Sardinia's harsh weather conditions, the Intelis wSource meters also detect household leaks with greater accuracy.

The introduction of these smart meters has yielded several benefits for Abbanoa. Not only has there been a 5% increase in revenue, but operating costs have also decreased. Additionally, customer satisfaction has improved, and billing has become more accurate.
