A Laboratory In A Pipeline Pig

MIC Corrosion Tek, LLC introduces "MIC-Pig" which is a unique pipeline pig that gathers information on internal corrosion and black powder as it travels down a pipeline.

Internal corrosion and its components are an increasing concern in the operational cost for pipelines. Internal pipeline corrosion reduces a pipeline's integrity along with threatening lives plus possible damages to the environment, if a leak develops. MIC-Pig is a pig which samples pipeline's in-situ gas, oil, water and black powder components to determine internal corrosion causes and appropriate mitigation methods, based on analytical results.

MIC-Pig was developed after MIC Corrosion Tek compared data collected from single-point samples (valves, etc.) plus end of pipeline corrosion by-products after a pig run. "We were shocked by the difference in sample components between the two common sampling methods when compared from the same pipeline," Doug Chartier, President of MIC Corrosion Tek stated. "Wrong conclusions can be reached from depending on previous sampling methods, particularly with MIC corrosion and black powder composition. MIC corrosion is a local event which may be missed with single-point sampling. Black powder component analysis depends on the efficiency of the cleaning pig plus variables including density and particle size. Incorrect analytical conclusions can result in wrong corrosion mitigation plans and programs. It is apparent that one must collect a sample from the entire pipeline for accurate results and conclusions. The answer: the development of MIC-Pig. The MIC-Pig may also be used to monitor the effectiveness of mitigation programs."

Once you run MIC-Pig, return it to MIC Corrosion Tek for an analysis and report. The report includes possible causes for the corrosion and mitigation methods recommended for corrosion abatement. The cost of MIC-Pig is for the pig itself, analytical services, recommendations for abatement and written report. MIC-Pig is patent pending and the only product which samples throughout the pipeline the three-phases (gas, liquid and solids) for corrosion sources and by-products.
