The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently introduced proposed changes to the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR) with the Lead and Copper Rule Improvements (LCRI). These changes aim to ensure the safety of drinking water by requiring the replacement of all service lines made of lead or galvanized-requiring-replacement materials.

To achieve compliance with the LCRI, water systems need to understand three critical paths. Firstly, they must ensure short-term compliance by October 16, 2024. This involves completing a Service Line Inventory by the specified date and notifying customers about the materials used in their service lines within 30 days of completing the inventory.
