Award Recognizes Early-stage Company with the Most Impressive Commercial Breakthrough in 2016

Water Planet, a California-based company that markets the world's first smart membrane products, has received the 2017 Global Water Award as Breakthrough Water Technology Company of the Year. Presented at the Palacio de Cibeles in Madrid, the award honors the early stage company that made the most impressive commercial breakthrough into the global water technology market during 2016.

Global Water Intelligence, whose Global Water Awards are considered one of the water industry’s most prestigious honors, commented that “Water Planet’s successes have been nurtured by a laser-sharp focus on innovation, as well as teamwork and a culture where every employee is encouraged to put their ideas forward. Founded only five years ago, the company has made a mockery of the traditional protracted technology commercialization process in the water sector.”

“We are indeed honored by this award and wish to thank our team members, customers, strategic partners, investors and early researcher collaborators at UCLA. Their combined support has been instrumental in Water Planet’s extraordinary success. In an industry where it often takes a decade or more to successfully commercialize a new technology, we have successfully commercialized two revolutionary products in half that time. This success shows us that the market is keen to embrace the advantages that these intelligent membrane products can deliver to customers across all industries,” said Eric Hoek, CEO of Water Planet.

Since 2011, Water Planet has developed and successfully brought to market two breakthrough products: IntelliFlux, the industry’s first artificial-intelligence based self-adaptive flux optimization control software, and PolyCera, a revolutionary, Nobel Prize-winning polymer technology, which enables production of a new class of hydrophilic, robust and easy to clean filtration membranes.

In 2016, Water Planet achieved the commercial launch and the first sales of PolyCera-based ultrafiltration membranes in the US, Canada, China and India. In addition, Water Planet closed its initial US sale of two IntelliFlux-powered ultrafiltration systems as the first part of a multi-year, multi-unit contract with a leading oilfield service company in Canada. Water Planet also sold its first two units of another multi-year, multi-unit deal contract with a water treatment OEM employing PolyCera membranes and powered by IntelliFlux in mobile tertiary treatment of off-grid domestic wastewater. By 2019, through these first two strategic agreements, Water Planet’s break-through ultrafiltration products will be cleaning up over 2 billion gallons of wastewater annually.
