Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades Project Begins
South Wairarapa District Council has signed a contract with Filtec Limited for the delivery of upgrades at Martinborough, Greytown and Featherston wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). All three wastewater treatment plants need biological nutrient upgrades to address resource consent compliance.
Mayor Fran Wilde says that this is an important step towards Council’s commitment to improving water management and infrastructure and enabling sustainable growth.
“Our Long-Term Plan 2025/34 prioritises significant upgrades to these wastewater treatment plants. We’ve worked closely with Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) to determine achievable and technically proven enhancements to improve performance”.
The project involves the following:
- Martinborough and Greytown WWTPs will have Moving Bed Biofilm Reactors (MBBR) installed as the primary process for nutrient removal, and Greytown WWTP will also have an upgraded UV disinfection system to reduce pathogen risk.
- In accordance with the consent at Featherston WWTP, a Dissolved Air Floatation (DAF) system will be installed for nutrient removal.
- All three treatment plants will have inlet screen upgrades to remove solids that clog up equipment. Additionally, there will be associated upgrades of power supplies and control systems for the new equipment.
With a focus on cost control, efficiency and measurable outcomes, the WWTP upgrades project is essential for the sustainable growth aspirations of South Wairarapa communities.
Mayor Wilde says “A rigorous tender evaluation process has been followed, and we look forward to working with Filtec Limited, who have demonstrated strong capability in delivering comparable wastewater treatment upgrades at operational plants”.
The project is scheduled for completion within the 2027/28 financial year, which means that project completion will be under the banner of WaitÄ« Waters, Wairarapa–Tararua’s new regional water services organisation.
