Wastewater Treatment Facility Serving Hershey, PA Selects Ecoremedy For Biosoids Improvement Program
Ecoremedy’s Fluid Lift Gasification system has been selected by Derry Township Municipal Authority (DTMA) as the major component in a biosolids improvement program at its Clearwater Road Wastewater Treatment facility. The five-million-gallon per day plant serves the residents, visitors and businesses of Hershey, PA, which includes the popular Hershey Park theme park and hotels, Hershey Chocolate World, Hershey Chocolate production plants and Tröegs Independent Brewing.
The installation of Ecoremedy’s full-scale biosolids drying and gasification platform is expected to boost the wastewater treatment facility’s sustainability by expanding capacity and increasing energy efficiency, according to DTMA Executive Director William Rehkop.
Already accepting organic waste from industrial and municipal sources and with plans to increase waste streams, DTMA has a long-term vision to recover and reuse resources, reduce landfill waste and generate alternative revenue sources to lessen the financial burden to local customers.
Ecoremedy’s President and CTO David Mooney said the company’s simultaneous gasification and nutrient and energy recovery system will help the Authority achieve its goals.
“Our Fluid Lift Gasification technology will allow the facility to process higher amounts of biosolids and convert them into renewable thermal energy, activated biochar and concentrated minerals,” he said. “This will keep sludge out of local landfills and create a sustainable fuel source.”
In 2021, Ecoremedy received an EPA ruling that its Fluid Lift Gasification technology is not incineration. The process eliminates dependence on fossil fuels and avoids the production of highly toxic and carcinogenic dioxins and furans commonly associated with incineration. A major advantage of the state-of-the-art platform is its ability to reduce or eliminate emerging contaminants, such as PFAS.
DTMA’s significant investment at the Clearwater Road plant aligns with the Authority’s ongoing mission, Rehkop said.
“We provide a cost-effective public service that protects and enhances the water environment and quality of life for our community,” he said. “By implementing self-sustaining facility improvements and expanding our hauled waste program, we have generated alternate revenue sources which have significantly subsidized operation and maintenance costs.”
Leading environmental engineering and construction services firm Brown and Caldwell is providing construction management, design services, and permitting to accommodate the new system and the development of a biosolids receiving facility at the plant. Manufacturing representative Kappe Associates, developed the system’s scope, performance, throughput and capabilities for Ecoremedy.
