Wastewater Treatment And Conservation At Eaton's Toccoa Aerospace Site Earn Industrial Plant Of The Year Honors
Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation’s aerospace facility in Toccoa, Ga., was honored recently by the Georgia Association of Water Professionals as the industrial 2011 Plant of the Year for outstanding operation of industrial pollution control in indirect wastewater discharge for physical and chemical pretreatment. The association also recognized Eaton’s facility for water conservation. Eaton was the only indirect treatment winner in Georgia, where hundreds of such facilities are in operation.
“Receiving the Plant of the Year award is a great honor and reflects Eaton’s commitment to environmental stewardship in the communities where we live and work,” said Bill Hayford, plant manager of Eaton’s Toccoa facility. “Being an environmental leader is very important to us. Globally the company reduced water consumption by nearly 10 percent last year, indexed to sales. It takes investment in resources and training to achieve our environmental goals, and Eaton is committed.”
Eaton’s Toccoa site won the Plant of the Year award by earning the highest score based on an onsite audit by two independent wastewater specialists. The reviewers, impressed with Eaton’s team approach toward environmental compliance, gave Eaton a score greater than 95 percent.
An outstanding feature noted by inspectors was the water system interlock that closes the influent potable water valve if tanks at the wastewater treatment plant are full. Inspectors complimented Eaton on its superior work in setting up and using a preventive maintenance program.
During the scoring audit, inspectors reviewed results of continuous improvement projects in water conservation and gave an additional award to the Toccoa site for water conservation.
The Toccoa plant treats wastewater from its manufacturing processes and transports it to the local wastewater treatment facility. Samples are analyzed to ensure compliance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards and local permit requirements.
The industrial wastewater awards program is a service of the Georgia Association of Water Professionals, a not-for-profit professional association founded in 1932. The organization has grown to more than 5,000 operators, owners, contractors, manufacturers' representatives, engineers, elected officials, industry representatives and others concerned with Georgia's water resources. .
