Understanding Biofilm Through Oxidative Diversity

Oxidant concentration, ORP, reaction rates, and microbial inactivation are the standard markers of oxidative performance, yet two treatments with similar residuals or oxidation potentials can behave very differently against biofilm. This installment of the Understanding Biofilm series, written by sanitary engineer Emma Flanagan, proposes Oxidative Diversity as a way to account for that gap. Rather than asking which oxidant is strongest, it asks what a given chemistry can do as a system, given a matrix of polymers, proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and mineral-associated structures that are not equally reachable or equally vulnerable. It also considers why counting reactive species falls short, and what a functional measure might eventually look like. Weigh the framework against your own approach to biofilm control.
