The National Association Of Water Companies Applauds Key Elements Of Rebuild America Partnership

The National Association of Water Companies (NAWC) – the organization exclusively representing America’s private water industry – recently commended the Obama Administration’s recognition that the private sector is an integral partner in investing in and securing our nation’s water infrastructure systems for the future. In announcing the Rebuild America Partnership on March 29th, the White House reflected that “…America works best when it’s calling upon the resources and ingenuity of our vibrant private sector.”
Designed to encourage private investment in U.S. infrastructure, the initiative “is a bold, forward-looking strategy to focus federal policies on leveraging the power of private enterprise,” said Michael Deane, executive director of the NAWC. “In an era of growing demand and increasing pressure on public finance, private investment has a critical role to play in meeting water infrastructure needs,” he added. “One proposal highlighted by the President – eliminating the state volume cap on exempt facility water and wastewater private activity bonds – would allow tax-exempt debt to help finance this important public purpose.”
The NAWC frequently recommends innovative financing policies to the Administration and Congress that would give local leaders the tools they need to access private capital in meeting their water infrastructure challenges. The NAWC also promotes public-private partnerships in communities, which pair the best skills and assets of the public and private sectors to achieve common goals of good customer service delivery, efficient operations and water system upgrades.
Deane praised the Administration for its recognition of the value of these partnerships, which can create jobs and increase investment in critical infrastructure projects. “The President’s support of eliminating the volume cap for qualified PABs is a big step in the right direction,” according to Deane.
