Subsequent Treatment: Polishing And Nutrient Removal After Secondary

Subsequent treatment is the polishing stage that follows primary settling and the main biological step. It removes nitrogen, phosphorus, and residual organics, typically through an anoxic-aerobic (A2/O) or sequencing train, so the effluent meets a tight discharge limit. The tankage is usually bolted Glass-Fused-to-Steel reactors and clarifiers chosen for corrosion resistance and fast assembly.

Why Subsequent Treatment Is Needed
Primary treatment only drops settleable solids, and the main secondary stage removes most carbon but not nutrients. Many permits now cap total nitrogen and total phosphorus, which the earlier stages leave in solution. Subsequent treatment is the stage that strips those out before discharge.

Stage Removes Typical Equipment
Primary Settleable solids Clarifier
Main biological COD, BOD, some N Anaerobic or activated sludge
Subsequent polishing Remaining N, P, residuals A2/O or SBR, filter

How Nutrients Are Removed
An anoxic-aerobic sequence removes nitrogen: nitrate is formed in the aerobic zone and returned to the anoxic zone where it is denitrified to nitrogen gas. Phosphorus is captured by controlled sludge age or chemical addition. The train is sized only after the upstream load is defined, not as a generic add-on.

A Boundary Condition
Subsequent treatment cannot fix an undersized upstream stage; if the secondary train is overloaded, polishing will simply inherit the deficit. The polishing volume must be sized to the actual residual load, and the return flows must be balanced so the anoxic zone has carbon to denitrify. Design it from the load the upstream stage actually hands it.

About The Supplier
Shijiazhuang Zhengzhong Technology Co., Ltd (Center Enamel) manufactures Glass-Fused-to-Steel tanks rated for municipal and industrial polishing duty, with enamel firing at 820-930 C and certifications including ISO 9001, NSF/ANSI 61, and CE-EN 1090. The bolted system supports rapid overseas deployment and factory-controlled quality.

Comparison: Polishing Technologies

Technology Best For Note
A2/O Nitrogen and phosphorus Compact, integrated
SBR Variable loads Flexible cycle
Sand or membrane filter Tight final polish Higher capital

Subsequent treatment is where permits are actually met or missed. Design it from the residual load, choose tankage that lets the whole train be built and commissioned on schedule, and the polishing stage becomes a measured guarantee rather than a hope.
