SRP-Funded Technology Provides Affordable PFAS Testing For Homeowners

Widespread contamination from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) presents an urgent challenge for water management, but the high cost of certified laboratory testing frequently leaves private well owners and budget-constrained communities without a clear understanding of their water quality. Emerging decentralized monitoring solutions provide a valuable alternative. Utilizing an innovative adsorbent composed of corn starch-derived cyclodextrins, these novel, mail-in test kits capture target contaminants on a compact filter disc right at the source. Independent state evaluations have confirmed that this simplified method provides strong comparability to standard, accredited commercial laboratory results, identifying up to 55 different PFAS compounds with high reliability. Incorporating these accessible tools as an initial screening layer allows operators and health officials to efficiently isolate high-risk zones without overextending programmatic budgets.
