Southern Nevada Water Authority Opens New Water Quality, R&D Laboratory

Las Vegas, NV — The Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) took a major step in becoming a leader in water quality research and testing with the grand opening of its new Water Quality Laboratory and Applied Research & Development Center.

Located at the SNWA's River Mountains Water Treatment Facility (RMWTF) in Henderson, Nev., the 50,000-square-foot lab provides space for SNWA staff to process and analyze water quality samples, perform research on emerging water quality issues, and pilot test new treatment processes and technologies.

"By consolidating and expanding our water quality research capabilities, this laboratory underscores the SNWA's commitment and dedication to providing reliable, quality water supplies to our member agencies and the community," said SNWA General Manager Pat Mulroy.

Speaking at the grand opening ceremony, Paula MacIlwaine, deputy executive director of the American Water Works Association (AWWA), said the facility also will support the SNWA's groundbreaking research into emerging water quality issues including the presence of endocrine disruptors and other pharmaceuticals in the nation's municipal water supplies.

"The knowledge gained at this laboratory could have long-ranging ramifications for water utilities not just in Southern Nevada, but across the country. The AWWA is an ardent advocate for water quality research that promotes safe drinking water," MacIlwaine said.

Construction of the new lab began in 2005. The project stemmed from a 2001 study commissioned by the SNWA that explored ways to enhance the Las Vegas Valley's water system and become a leader in testing, and research and development of water treatment. Among the recommendations were the expansion of existing lab facilities and the addition of pilot plants to test new technologies.
