Smart, Sustainable Water Management For Galveston With BlueEdge

Water is a precious commodity in the City of Galveston, Texas. Working with Badger Meter, the utility has transformed its water and wastewater utility operations with BlueEdge. What began as an AMI upgrade morphed into a total system overhaul, replacing water meters that had been in service for more than 20 years and moving to a cellular AMI system. Building upon this real-time, accurate water network data, BlueEdge solutions including several water quality and pressure management devices across the island were added over time to deliver proactive management of network operations.

The City of Galveston's bespoke BlueEdge solution includes: E-Series® Ultrasonic meters with an integrated flow restriction valve, larger E-Series® Ultrasonic meters equipped with pressure and temperature sensors, ORION® cellular endpoints that securely communicate metering data to the utility, utilizing the BEACON® Software as a Service (SaaS) platform. End customers can access their water consumption information via the EyeOnWater app, too. In-network water quality and pressure monitoring devices like MetriNet and PIPEMINDER deliver accurate, real-time data to utility staff without disrupting the water supply.

In March 2024, the City of Galveston Sustainable Interactive Customer Connections (SICC) project was named one of the top 20 smart city projects globally, and received a Smart 20 Award. The Smart 20 Awards celebrate municipal-scale and regional-scale smart projects with measurable results.
