SLURRYCUP™ Sludge Degritting Bulletin
Historically, grit removal has usually been in-stalled in the headworks of the plant. How-ever, many plants do not have adequate grit removal to handle the grit loads. Therefore, large quantities of grit can pass through the headworks and settle in the clarifiers. As a re-sult, it is often cost effective and necessary to degrit the clarifier sludge before sending it to solids processing and disposal. Removal of grit from sludge reduces grit deposits in aero-bic and anaerobic digesters. Otherwise, re-moving grit deposits from digesters is expen-sive, time consuming, and requires taking the digesters offline. Furthermore, sludge degrit-ting protects centrifuges, digestion systems, solids handling equipment, high-pressure pro-gressing cavity and diaphragm pumps, and other mechanical equipment by reducing un-necessary abrasive wear.
