The Decanter solves these problems by a dual floating weir system which provides a consistent rate of water withdrawal. This allows the removal of water with the least amount of scum or sludge.

When the tank is not being mixed, the material will assume three distinct layers:

• Sludge at the Bottom
  
• Supernatant Liquid in the Middle
  
• Floating Scum/Grease Layer on Top

Douglas Engineering Decanter Heads are designed to produce a maximum flow rate at the weir tip which defines the upstream velocities. The maximum flow rate may be altered for specific applications but is normally set at 1.8 cubic meters per minute-per meter of weir.

Because of the acceleration capabilities of a properly placed weir, large amounts of water can be picked up by the decanter head at very low velocities so the sludge is not drawn into the decanter.

Weir placement is automatic and is accomplished by internal floatation relationships between the weir, the decanter body and the forces of the water.
