Pennsylvania American Water Making $4M Upgrade To Strengthen Fairview Wastewater System

Project will modernize treatment facilities to deliver more reliable, environmentally responsible service for customers

Pennsylvania American Water today announced that a project to upgrade two wastewater treatment plants in Fairview Township, York County, is scheduled to begin in August. The $4M improvements will strengthen system performance and reliability, enhance safety and help protect local waterways.

“Investing in these upgrades means better treatment, safer operations, and a healthier environment for the Fairview Township community,” said Josh Weiand, senior engineering project manager for Pennsylvania American Water. “Our customers count on us every day for reliable, environmentally responsible service, and this project helps us deliver on that commitment.”

The project includes upgrades at the Fairview Township North and South wastewater treatment plants, modernizing key equipment and treatment systems to improve performance and long-term reliability. Both facilities, originally built in 1965 and 1993, will receive updates designed to keep them operating efficiently for years to come.

As part of the project, both plants will receive updated chemical treatment systems to improve the efficiency and consistency of the treatment process.

The company will also upgrade chemical handling areas to support safer storage and delivery of treatment materials.

At the Fairview Township South plant, crews will install new equipment to improve the way solids are processed, making operations more efficient and dependable.

Construction at both facilities will occur concurrently and is expected to be completed in mid-2027. Wastewater service for customers is not expected to be impacted during the project.

These infrastructure projects are not only an important investment in public health and safety, they also help support the economic vitality of the community. Research shows that for every $1M invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 10 jobs are generated throughout the economy. Statewide, Pennsylvania American Water invested approximately $722M in 2025 alone to improve its water and wastewater treatment and pipeline systems, supporting more than 7,220 jobs.
