Pennsylvania American Water Announces $479,000 Butler Wastewater System Upgrade

Nearly 2,000 feet of wastewater main to be replaced, with future water upgrades and resurfacing planned

Pennsylvania American Water announced the start of an approximately $479,000 project to replace nearly 2,000 feet of 12-inch aging wastewater main that had been subject to multiple breaks on Sawmill Run Road in Butler Township, Butler County.

“Since acquiring the Butler Area Sewer Authority, we’ve been committed to making necessary improvements,” said Michelle Cavallo, manager of northwest wastewater operations for Pennsylvania American Water. “By replacing aging wastewater mains that are prone to breaks, we are lowering the risk of untreated wastewater leaking into the environment and helping to safeguard water quality and public health.”

After installing the wastewater main, the road's excavated section will be repaired to endure winter weather. During spring, company contractors will reopen the road to replace the old water main in the area. After both the water and wastewater main replacements are finished, the affected section of Sawmill Run Road will be fully resurfaced.

Cavallo added, “As the community’s water and wastewater provider, we are ideally situated to efficiently coordinate water and wastewater construction projects, reducing disruptions for customers.”

Crews will work on weekdays between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. with construction expected to take 30 to 45 days. Single-lane traffic closures will take place during work hours. This infrastructure upgrade project is not only an important investment in public health and service reliability, it also helps support the economic health of the community. Economic impact studies show that for every $1M invested in water infrastructure, upwards of 15 jobs are generated throughout the economy.
