Palm Springs Wastewater Plant Recognized For Visionary COVID-19 Testing Program

The American Public Works Association has recognized the wastewater treatment plant that Veolia North America operates and maintains in Palm Springs, CA, for implementing an innovative testing program that analyzes wastewater for traces of the COVID-19 virus. The testing helps provide the City with an accurate picture of the level of virus activity in area homes and businesses, supporting efforts to combat the spread of the disease. In 2020, a few months after the virus outbreak, the Palm Springs City Council asked Veolia North America to explore the wastewater testing program, which has been piloted in several other U.S. municipalities after researchers determined it is effective in gauging virus levels. Veolia North America contracted with GT Molecular, a biotechnology company, to conduct weekly tests at the plant, which are continuing. The testing involves collecting samples of wastewater at the plant and then analyzing them in a laboratory for traces of COVID-19.

Due to the visionary thinking that went into the program, the Coachella Valley Branch of the American Public Works Association recognized the City of Palm Springs with a Project of Merit Award, while the APWA’s Southern California Branch recognized the program with its Project of the Year Award.

A statement from the City said: “The wastewater covid data obtained by Veolia North America, was provided to the City Council to help them make informed decisions for our community. While the decisions were tough, this data helped the public to go along with new regulations when they were added and understand when local orders were relaxed.”
