Overland Flow And SWMM Modeling Just Got Even Better

OverlandFlow.jpg

The latest update to InfoWorks ICM, version 2021.1, offers a large number of new and enhanced features that overland flow modelers, SWMM network users, and those employing RAFTS hydrology will immediately find valuable.

Existing customers will find full details in the Help pages. If you're not yet a customer, contact us for more information on any aspect of InfoWorks ICM.

What's new in InfoWorks ICM 2021.1?

Among the many updates that the team has worked hard to bring to customers, you'll find:

River and Overland Flow Improvements

Being the best solution for our customers when it comes to the toughest and most complex modeling problems means that our team constantly improves even the rich functionality already offered.

With this latest release, a trove of updates and expanded functionality has been added to make complex riverine and overland flow modeling quicker to configure and provide more accurate results.

Clip Meshing: One fundamental element of 2-Dimensional hydraulic models is the underlying geometric mesh which, in general, ultimately defines the calculation points that will represent the topography of a given area.

Innovyze has been actively investigating and developing a new meshing approach to further maximize simulation performance and completeness of results. A new “Clip Meshing” approach for generating a 2D Mesh is available in InfoWorks ICM 2021.1 and been found to be (on average) four times faster than the already robust classic meshing approach.

While the improvements shown with the new Clip Meshing approach vary given the project and terrain, benefits over the ‘classic’ approach are most notable where high-resolution ground models and where overlapping or ‘close proximity’ terrain points are present. Clip Meshing uses more streamlined processes and rules to better represent these complex data sets, resulting in faster and more realistic meshes.

Additional River and Overland Flow Improvements include:

  • For Rivers:
    • Cross Section Extensions and Straightening options
    • Weighted Manning’s ‘n’ choice for overbank conveyance
  • Overland Flow:
    • New Clip Meshing method [As noted above]
    • 3D View enhancements for flood map results
    • Flood Contour Theming

Time-Series Database (TSDB) for SWMM

With the expansive work completed in the previous release (11.0) related to SWMM network modeling in ICM, we are excited to announce the incorporation of SWMM networks in the TSDB data system for the new 2020.1 release.

This will allow the many benefits of TSDB previously reserved for InfoWorks networks, such as flexible data manipulation, real-time analytics, and the combination of rain gauge and 2D rainfall data for SWMM network users as well.

RAFTS in ICM - Importer

An XPRAFTS model importer for InfoWorks ICM 2021.1 completes the workflow process for engineers who use RAFTS hydrology and are ready for a more efficient and outcome-driven integrated tool than the fragmented workflow process outside of ICM that they might have used in the past. Now, it is even faster to get started in ICM with a project demanding the use of RAFTS hydrology by simply importing an existing XPRAFTS model.
