Chlorate can be a common by-product of water disinfection, and can also adversely affect humans. Chlorate primarily forms when storing bulk sodium hypochlorite in the context of water disinfection. When bulk sodium hypochlorite is stored, degradation causes chlorate formation and is exacerbated at higher concentrations.
