Ohio EPA Seeks Comments on Superfund Site

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on June 23 its selection of a preferred Natural Resource Restoration Plan (NRRP) for the Pristine Superfund site in Reading. An information session and a public hearing are scheduled for June 30, 1998, at 7 p.m. at the Reading City Hall.

The preferred NRRP combines two proposals by the City of Reading:

    (1) the development of a "Greenways/Quiet Park" on the site of the recently demolished Reading water plant and power plant;

    (2) the partial funding of the interconnection of Reading's water system to the Cincinnati Water Works. (Reading's groundwater was contaminated by Pristine).

In 1974, Pristine Inc. began operating as a liquid-waste-disposal facility adjacent to the Reading's well field. The company reportedly received acids, organic solvents, and waste products that were incinerated or acid neutralized and disposed of at the site. In 1979, found a variety of hazardous substances contaminating the soil and groundwater. State actions caused Pristine to close in 1981. The site was added to the National Priorities List in 1982 for cleanup under the federal Superfund program.

The Ohio EPA is accepting written comments until July 10, 1998, which should be sent to the Ohio EPA, Southwest District Office, Attn: Laura Marshall, 401 East Fifth Street, Dayton, OH 45402. Contact: Lynne Barst, Tel: 614-644-2160.
