NX Filtration And Eau d'Azur Partner For Advanced Micropollutant Treatment In Nice

NX Filtration, a global leader in advanced hollow fiber membrane technology, is proud to announce its collaboration with Eau d’Azur, the public company responsible for drinking water and wastewater services for the Nice Côte d'Azur Metropole. Together, we are implementing an innovative pilot project at the Haliotis urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Nice, one of France's largest.

The challenge posed by micropollutants in urban wastewater is increasingly pressing, with negative impacts on aquatic environments. National and European regulations are evolving to impose stricter requirements. The revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWT Directive 2022), which includes micropollutant removal, has been adopted at the European level and is now undergoing transposition into national legislation in each member state, including France.

To anticipate and prepare for this future regulation, Eau d'Azur is undertaking this pilot project at the Haliotis plant. The goal is to look for best technologies to be applied as a quaternary treatment, or "advanced tertiary treatment," to remove these micropollutants from the effluent before it is discharged into the environment. This initiative is crucial for the future Haliotis 2 WWTP, which will have an annual capacity of 45,000,000 m³.

This research project aims to demonstrate and validate the combination of NX Filtration’s hollow fiber nanofiltration membrane technology with Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). This integrated solution will enable the effective removal of micropollutants present in the effluent from the urban WWTP. The pilot project will last 12 months, starting at the end of July 2025 and concluding at the end of July 2026.

The success of this project relies on a strong and multidisciplinary collaboration. In addition to NX Filtration and Eau d’Azur, the Agence de l’Eau Rhône Méditerranée Corse is partly funding this experiment. The Université de Nice also brings its expertise, enriching knowledge exchange and result analysis.
